On the transformation between micro-concave and micro-convex in nanosecond laser ablation of a Zr-based metallic glass

Understanding the physical mechanism of laser-material interaction is significant and meaningful in both pure science engineering applications. Laser ablation induced micro-concave a commonly-observed phenomenon, but formation micro-convex by laser rarely reported. In this study, transformation surface microstructure from to micro-convex, then again was reported for first time typical Zr-based metallic glass (MG). The experimental results indicated that such transformations strongly depended on peak power intensity number pulses. coupling effects recoil pressure Marangoni flow were proposed explain observed transformation. By locally overlapping adjacent micro-convexes, various patterns could be fabricated MG surface, which tune its wettability. This study would not only enhance understanding laser-MG also provide new methods patterning surface.

The mechanical properties of a Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 metallic glass rod are investigated by Vickers microhardness and depth-sensing nanoindentation. The alloy exhibits a relatively large hardness which decreases when increasing the maximum applied load. Serrated flow is also observed during nanoindentation. Both effects are related to deformationinduced mechanical softening.
